यह कहानी एक बुढ़िया की है, जो मिट्टी के गणेश जी की पूजा किया करती थी। हर दिन वह नए मिट्टी से गणेश जी की मूर्ति बनाती थी, और यही मूर्तियाँ रोज़ गल जाती थीं। एक दिन, एक सेठ का घर बन रहा था। सेठ ने बुढ़िया से कहा, “कृपया मेरे लिए पत्थर की गणेश मूर्ति बना दो।”
मिस्त्री (कारीगर) ने उससे कहा, “हम जितनी मूर्तियाँ तुम्हारे लिए बनाएंगे, उनकी कीमत में हम अपनी दीवार को नहीं चीरेंगे।”
बुढ़िया ने मना किया, “ठीक है, तुम्हारी मांग पर मैं सहमत हूँ।”
फिर बुढ़िया ने मन्त्रों के साथ पत्थर की गणेश मूर्ति बनाना शुरू किया। परंतु जैसे-जैसे वह मूर्ति बनाती गई, उसकी घर की दीवार टेढ़ी होती जाती। वह बार-बार दीवार को सही करने का प्रयास करती, पर दीवार हमेशा टेढ़ी हो जाती।
इसी तरह वह मूर्ति बनाती रही और दीवार को सही करने का प्रयास करती रही, और समय बीत गया। शाम को सेठ आया और बुढ़िया से पूछा, “तुमने आज कुछ किया क्या?”
बुढ़िया ने जवाब दिया, “हमने आपके लिए पत्थर की गणेश मूर्ति बनाने का काम किया है, पर वो अभी तक तैयार नहीं हुई है।”
सेठ ने सवाल किया, “लेकिन तुमने मेरी दीवार को सीधा क्यों नहीं किया?”
बुढ़िया ने उत्तर दिया, “हमने आपके लिए पत्थर की गणेश मूर्ति बनाने की कोशिश की थी, पर वो नहीं बनी, और हमारी दीवार टेढ़ी हो गई है।”
सेठ ने बुढ़िया को बुलवाया और कहा, “मैं तुम्हारे लिए सोने की गणेश मूर्ति बना दूंगा, पर तुमकी दीवार को सीधा कर दो।”
सेठ ने बुढ़िया को सोने की गणेश मूर्ति दिलवाई और उसकी दीवार सीधी हो गई। जैसे कि सेठ की दीवार सीधी हो गई, वैसे ही सभी अन्य लोगों ने भी अपनी दीवारों को सीधा कराया।

This is the story of an old lady who used to worship clay Ganesha. Every day she used to make idols of Ganesha with new clay, and these idols used to melt everyday. One day, a Seth’s house was being built. Seth said to the old lady, “Please make a stone Ganesh idol for me. The Mistry (artisan) told him, “We will not tear down our wall for the price of the idols we will make for you.”
The old lady refused, “Okay, I agree to your demand.”
Then the old lady started making the stone Ganesha idol with mantras. But as she went on making the idol, the wall of her house became crooked. She tried again and again to straighten the wall, but the wall always turned crooked.
In this way she went on sculpting and trying to fix the wall, and time passed. Seth came in the evening and asked the old lady, “Did you do anything today?”
Udhiya replied, “We have made a stone Ganesh idol for you, but it is not ready yet.”
Seth questioned, “But why didn’t you straighten my wall?”
The old woman replied, “We tried to make a stone Ganesha idol for you, but it could not be made, and our wall has become crooked.”
